Drumtochty Castle Wedding Venue
Drumtochty Castle is one of those venues that stops you in your tracks the first time you see it. The tree-lined drive, the fairy-tale church, the glen — it’s the sort of place that feels like you’ve stepped into another era. And photographically? It’s a dream.
The light through those ballroom windows, the woodland paths, the two-acre lake with its wooden bridge — every corner offers something different.
If you’re planning your wedding at Drumtochty Castle and looking for a calm,
natural Aberdeen wedding photographer, you can find more about my approach to weddings across the city and Aberdeenshire here.
What makes Drumtochty special
An exclusive-use venue, which means when you book Drumtochty, it’s yours. The castle, the grounds, St Palladius Church, all of it. No other weddings happening down the corridor, no strangers wandering through your photographs. Just you, your guests, and 350 acres of Aberdeenshire countryside.
The castle itself dates back to 1812 and sleeps up to 23 guests in the main building, with accommodation across the estate for up to 99 people total. That means your closest friends and family can stay on-site — no midnight taxis, no rushing off. The weekend becomes an experience, not just a day.
Ceremony options
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to where to say your vows. St Palladius Church is the standout — a proper fairy-tale church that photographs beautifully in any season. Inside the castle, the Gold Room (with its white baby grand piano) and the Ballroom both make stunning ceremony spaces. If the weather’s on your side, the gardens or lakeside are equally magical.
The light and the grounds
From a photographer’s perspective, Drumtochty has it all. The Ballroom, with those floor-to-ceiling windows, floods the space with natural light — perfect for capturing those emotional ceremony moments and the atmosphere during dinner. The reception rooms (the Gold and Blue rooms) have that classic, regal feel with antique furniture and portraits that add character to every frame.
Outside, the woodland paths and glens offer endless options for couple portraits. The two-acre pond with the wooden bridge is an obvious favourite, but honestly, you could spend hours exploring the estate and never run out of beautiful backdrops. Even in winter, when the trees are bare, and the light is softer, it’s stunning.

How I work at Drumtochty
Because most weddings at Drumtochty are weekend affairs, there’s a more relaxed rhythm to the day. I would typically arrive in the morning to capture bridal preparations — the castle’s bridal suite is spacious and bright, perfect for hair-and-makeup photos with your bridesmaids.
The ceremony, whether in the church or the castle, I would position myself to capture both the emotion and the setting without intruding. After the ceremony, we’ll usually have drinks in the reception rooms or on the lawn — great for those natural, candid moments with guests.
Group photos and family shots work well outside on the grounds (weather permitting) or in the Ballroom. I keep these organised and efficient — no one wants to spend an hour standing around for photos when there’s champagne waiting.
For your couple portraits, we’ll slip away for 20-30 minutes. My approach is to guide you through the estate, finding the best light and the most atmospheric spots, while keeping everything natural and relaxed. No awkward posing — just the two of you, in this incredible setting, with me capturing the moments as they unfold.
The Ballroom works beautifully for the reception, with space for up to 120 guests for dinner. The crystal, the candelabras, the atmosphere — it all comes together. I stay through the speeches, cake cutting, and first dance, making sure to capture the reactions, the laughter, and those fleeting moments you’ll want to remember.

Estate to Plate
Worth mentioning: Drumtochty has its own in-house chefs and follows an “Estate to Plate” philosophy. They farm their own venison and shoot wild game on the estate, which features in the wedding menus. The food is genuinely excellent, and it shows in the photos — guests enjoying a proper feast always make for great candid shots.
Practical details
The venue can host up to 120 guests for dinner and 180 for dancing. Minimum guest numbers vary by season and day of the week, so check with the venue directly. Weekend bookings include two nights’ accommodation in the castle’s 11 rooms for up to 23 guests, with breakfast included. You can extend your stay or add late checkout to make the most of the weekend.
The estate is near Laurencekirk, about 30 minutes south of Aberdeen, making it accessible but still feeling wonderfully remote.
Getting Married at Drumtochty Castle? Let’s Chat
There’s something about exclusive-use venues like this that brings out the best in wedding photography. The setting does half the work — the architecture, the light, the landscapes. But more than that, couples who choose Drumtochty tend to embrace the experience, enjoying the day rather than rushing through it. As such, this always leads to better photographs.
If you’re planning a wedding at Drumtochty Castle and you’re looking for a photographer who understands how to work with the light and will capture your day with a documentary approach (with guidance when you need it), I’d love to hear from you.
FAQ
Do you photograph weddings at Drumtochty Castle?
Yes — I photograph weddings at Drumtochty Castle and across Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire, with a relaxed documentary approach and gentle guidance when you need it.
What ceremony options are there at Drumtochty Castle?
You can choose from the on-site St Palladius Church or indoor ceremony spaces like the Gold Room or Ballroom. In good weather, outdoor ceremonies in the gardens or by the water can also work beautifully.
Where are the best spots for couple portraits at Drumtochty?
The woodland paths, glens, and the water are all brilliant. The pond and wooden bridge are a favourite, and the estate gives loads of variety without walking miles.
What if it rains on our wedding day?
Drumtochty is ideal for wet-weather weddings — we’ll use the character indoors, then grab a few quick outdoor portraits if there’s a break in the weather.
How much time do we need for couple photos?
Most couples need 10–20 minutes for a strong set of portraits. If you’d like more variety, we can split it into two shorter sessions so you’re not away from your guests for long.
Will you help us plan the photography timeline?
Yes. I’ll help you shape a timeline that keeps the day flowing, protects the best light, and leaves breathing room — especially around the ceremony, drinks reception, and speeches.
Do you give posing direction?
Yes, but gently. Most of the day is documentary, and for portraits, I’ll guide you with simple prompts so it still feels natural and not like a photoshoot.
Can we do a first look at Drumtochty Castle?
Definitely. The estate has quieter spots that are perfect for a calm first look, and it can make the rest of the day feel more relaxed.
Do you bring a backup kit and lighting?
Always. I bring backup cameras and lenses, and I use professional lighting for speeches and dancing so the evening photos look clean and consistent.
Where is Drumtochty Castle, and is it easy for guests to reach?
Drumtochty Castle is near Laurencekirk, roughly 30 minutes south of Aberdeen, so it feels tucked away while still being straightforward to get to.
