Wedding Photography - My Approach

Wedding Photography – My Approach

Choosing a wedding photographer is about more than liking a portfolio. It’s about trusting someone who will be there throughout your entire day, in every moment.
I’m Mike, the photographer at Fitlike Photography. From candid moments to expertly composed portraits, I cover weddings across the Scottish Highlands, including Inverness, Aberdeen, Elgin, and beyond, with a relaxed, natural, and polished style. My goal: you enjoy your day, and I document it beautifully.
Most of what I capture is real glances, reactions, nerves, laughter, and atmosphere you may not notice. The rest relies on experience: gentle portrait guidance, quick group photo organisation, and finding great light, even when Scotland surprises us.

A calm presence, not a production

Weddings don’t need to feel like a photoshoot. They need space to breathe.
My approach keeps things flowing; you’re never pulled away for long stretches. You won’t be constantly posed or directed. Instead, I watch, anticipate, and capture your story as it unfolds.
If you want beautiful photos without feeling staged, you’re exactly who I’m for.

Documentary first, with gentle guidance where it counts

I shoot in a documentary style for the majority of the day. That’s the backbone of what I do.
I step in only when it helps. Portraits look best with great light and the right location. Group photos run more smoothly when someone takes control. If you think, “we’re awkward in front of the camera,” most couples say the same.
You don’t need to know how to pose. You just need to show up as yourselves. I’ll handle the rest.

Light matters, even when it’s not “perfect.”

Scottish weddings are brilliant because they’re real. The weather changes and light shifts. You can’t pause the day for perfect conditions, so you need someone who works with what’s there.
My landscape photography background shapes how I shoot weddings. I read the scene, find clean backdrops, seek shelter if needed, and create portraits with whatever the day brings: soft clouds, wind and drama, or unexpected golden light.
Either way, the goal stays the same. Photos that feel effortless, look beautiful, and bring you right back.

Portraits that feel like a reset, not a disappearance

Couple portraits shouldn’t take over your wedding day. They should be a breather.
I’ll take you away briefly, create stunning images, and return you to your loved ones. Nothing cringe—just simple direction, good light, and a relaxed pace.
The best portraits come from connection, not perfection.

The story you’ll want to keep

Your wedding photos aren’t just for now. They’re for the you ten years from today, who wants to remember how it felt, not just how it looked.
I photograph weddings with a timeless, luxury approach: clean colour, beautiful contrast, elegant moments, and real emotion that matters as years pass.

Albums and artwork, done properly.

Some images are meant to live beyond the screen.
If you’d love your wedding story to be something tangible, I offer handcrafted albums and wall art that feel like real heirlooms. I use Graphistudio wedding albums because the quality is exceptional, the design options are genuinely stylish, and the finished result feels like it belongs on a coffee table for life. If you choose an album collection, you can expand pages or add artwork at any time.
It’s the difference between files you scroll past and a story you actually hold.

If you want relaxed, premium wedding photography in Scotland

If you’re planning a wedding in the Highlands, Inverness, Aberdeen, Elgin, Moray, Caithness, or anywhere across North Scotland, and want calm, natural, polished photography, I’d love to hear your plans.
You’ll get honest moments, beautiful portraits, and a full story that feels like your wedding, not a styled shoot.

Wedding Photography – FAQ

What’s your photography style?

It’s documentary-led, natural, and emotion-driven. Most of the day is real moments as they happen, with gentle guidance only when it improves the outcome, like portraits and group photos.

We’re awkward in front of the camera. Will that be an issue?

Not at all. Most couples feel that way. You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll guide you in a relaxed way, keep things moving, and make it feel easy rather than staged.

Do you still take the couple of portraits?

Absolutely, and they’re a big part of what I’m known for. The difference is that I keep the process calm and efficient, so you get stunning portraits without waiting ages.

How long do portraits take on the day?

Usually a short, focused window. Enough time to create something beautiful, but not so long that you miss your own wedding. If the light is especially good later on, I’ll often suggest a quick second round for variety.

Do you organise group photos?

Yes, and I do it in a way that keeps it stress-free. Group photos can be quick and easy with the right approach, which helps your drinks reception flow smoothly.

What if it rains or the weather is wild?

That’s Scotland. We work with it. I’ll always find the best option depending on the conditions, whether that’s shelter, soft light outside, or using the weather's mood for something dramatic and memorable.

Do you photograph weddings across Scotland?

Yes. I’m based in Elgin, Moray, and regularly photograph weddings across Inverness and the Highlands, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, Caithness, and further afield.

Do you offer wedding albums?

Yes. I offer handcrafted wedding albums using Graphistudio. They’re premium quality, beautifully finished, and designed to last. You can also add extra pages or artwork after booking.

How far in advance should we book you?

The earlier, the better, especially for peak-season dates. If you’re planning a wedding, it’s worth checking availability as soon as you've secured a venue.

How do we book?

Just send an enquiry through the contact page with your date, venue, and a few details about your plans. If I’m available, we’ll set up a chat and take it from there.
